Dockside Crane Refresher – Assess & Test

To teach the operators to safely operate the Dockside Crane.

On completion of the course, the operators will know:

• Their duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
• The machine identification, terminology and daily maintenance
• The safety aspects relating to the usage of this type of crane
• The safe methods of slinging

This course is a one day assess & test course, suitable for delegates who have previous training certification.

STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS:

• Powers of the Inspectorate
• The Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations1998 (an overview)
• The Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (an overview)
• British Standards 7121 Part 1: safe Use of Cranes

SAFE SYSTEMS OF WORK:

• Communication – Signaling code between Hatchway man and Crane Operator
• Basic ship construction – layout of quays and docks
• Safe load indicators and warning devices
• Types of cranes and their characteristics
• Fault reporting procedures
• Accident reporting procedures – Personal
• Equipment – Cargoes

INTRODUCTION OF SLINGING:

• Identification of slings to include:
• Wire rope – chain & cordage
• Basic sling inspection
• Sling angles
• Ancillary equipment – shackles – lifting beams
• Unsafe practices – snatching – dragging etc.
• Centre of Gravity Estimation of weight

INTRODUCTION OF DOCKSIDE CRANE:

• Identification of crane & terminology
• Controls & warning devices
• Daily maintenance
• Pre-start checks
• Starting up procedure
• Close down procedure

PRACTICAL CRANE OPERATION: (NO LOAD SITUATION) 

• Safe access to crane cab
• Start up procedure
• Use of controls: Hoists – lower – slew – luff – brakes
• Limit switches
• Use of radius indicator
• Positioning of crane in relationship to ship and mode of discharge or loading

PRACTICAL CRANE OPERATION:(LOAD SITUATION)

• Initially using test weights and all functions of the crane
• Cargo handling using Hatchway man

PRACTICAL SESSIONS WILL COMPRISE OF LOADING, DISCHARGING, RECEIVING, FORWARDING ALL TYPES OF CARGO (LIGHT, HEAVY, LONG LENGTHS).

CLOSING DOWN: 

• Parking of crane safely
• Isolation of crane power supply
• Safe egress from crane
• Course summary & review
• Trainee Assessment Course & Close

A certificate is awarded on successful completion of the Dockside Crane Refresher course.
